If your laptop is running Macintosh OS 9, the Location Manager control panel handles this issue elegantly. MacOSX users have Network Locations among their system preferences. There is also a MacOS9 style utility for MacOSX, called Location X available.
On Windows? Built-in support for mobility just isn't there. To avoid tedious manual reconfiguration, we install Netswitcher.
